Student privacy and data

What Lifetick keeps about students, who in the school can see it, and what happens to it when a student leaves.

This page is for schools deciding whether to use Lifetick with students. It covers what the app keeps, who in the school sees it, and how a student's data is removed. Our privacy policy has the full terms.

What Lifetick keeps about a student

  • Their account. Name, email address and time zone. Passwords are stored scrambled (hashed), never as plain text. Students who sign in with Google or Microsoft have no Lifetick password.
  • What they write. Goals, tasks, dreams, journal notes, tracker values and their answers to reflections.
  • What they do. When tasks are done and goals change, and when they last used the web or the app.
  • Messages with their teacher, and notes from mentoring meetings.

Payments are made by the school, not the student.

Students need to be 13 or older. The school gives consent for its students to use Lifetick, on behalf of their parents.

Who in the school sees it

  • The student's own teacher sees their goals, tasks, dreams and reflection answers. Journal notes, trackers and goals marked private stay with the student.
  • Admins and super teachers can open any student in the school.
  • Reflection answers go only to the student's own teacher. Admins see how many students answered, not what they wrote.
  • Admins can export data. Data export downloads goals and tasks, and journal activity, for everyone in the school. Goals marked private are left out.
  • Other students never see a student's goals or answers.

Students can see this for themselves under What their teacher can see on their Dashboard. See What mentors can and can't see.

Who outside the school sees it

Our privacy policy says only authorised employees, agents and contractors who have agreed to keep it confidential can access personal information. We may share information with government agencies or companies helping with fraud prevention, when the law allows or requires it, or to prevent or investigate fraud. It isn't given to them for marketing.

The iPhone app doesn't track students for advertising.

Student data is stored with Linode (Akamai) in the USA, and backed up every 24 hours for 7 days. Google sends Lifetick's emails, Sentry tells us when something breaks, and Google or Microsoft handle sign in for students who use them. See Where your data is stored.

When a student leaves

An admin removes the student from the school: open the student, choose •••, Edit profile, then Remove. There are two choices:

  • Release keeps the student's account and goals, and lets them carry on with Lifetick on their own.
  • Delete deletes their account and their goals, tasks, journal and trackers. It can't be undone.

While they're part of a school, students can't delete their own account. They ask an admin, as above.

Delete removes the student's goals, tasks, dreams, journal, trackers and values. Their reflection answers, messages with their teacher and mentoring meeting notes stay with the school. Copies stay in backups for up to 7 days.

When a school stops using Lifetick

If the school stops paying, it has 14 days to sort out payment. After that, or when the school closes its account, the school and its data are deleted. Students who have signed in keep their own personal Lifetick account.
